Chapter 6

“Please give me a glass of water, Miss Hamilton.” The Russian drank thirstily. “Valentina must have suffered a lot, but she could have told me. Many girls have made the same mistake.”

Mr. Zubkov thought for a few moments. “I will be frank with you yet again Miss Hamilton. I imagined the worst, that she had met a much younger man,” Mr. Zubkov looked down at his clothes, “an attractive and smarter man.” He cleared his throat, “What happened before my wife and I met, has nothing to do with me. I am willing to help her in any way, now and always. I will tell her this one day.”
“But I hope you are not going to tell her you employed a private detective to spy on her...”

“No, certainly not, Miss Hamilton. I will say nothing to my wife until she comes and confides in me. I know my appearance and manner is rather imposing but I’m a little different to what people would imagine.”
Daisy was quite moved.
“Thank you Miss Hamilton, I will always remember your kindness.” The oak took Daisy’s hand and kissed it, then disappeared out into the darkness of the night.

Months later, Daisy was sorting through society magazines trying to find out more about a new client of hers, when she came across an article about a magnificent reception given by the Russian embassy and a list of illustrious guests. One guest in particular Daisy found very interesting: Lord Paul Valentine Fitzgerald. There was also a picture of Mr. and Mrs. Zubkov smiling and talking to the young green-eyed Lord.

Hi Daisy, how are you? This is the first time I have ever written to you. I would like some advice. I'm 16 and in two weeks' time I am going on holiday to England (Canterbury) to study English and I'll stay with a family and go to school. What advice me can you give me to make the most of my stay? Thank you in advance for you answer.

Dear Francesca, I think you'd better take your umbrella with you as it's particularly rainy this summer :-) Try to always listen to how people express themselves so that your English will become proper English and not Italian-translated English. You could also watch TV programmes on the BBC with English subtitles, this would benefit your English enormously. Don't worry about not understanding everything and think you are obliged to speak perfect English immediately. Try to mix with English-speaking people and not Italians, Spaniards etc. as they won't be speaking English perfectly! Be prepared to make mistakes, it's normal! And last but not least, have a very good time! Best wishes.

Thank you and have a nice summer!

Dear Corinna,

have you ever tried looking in shopping malls (centri commerciali) or big bookstores like Feltrinelli, Mondadori, Giunti? They sell easy versions of classics, fairy stories etc. I would advise you to buy something that you really like. If you order children's books from the UK or America, they won't be necessarily easier for you to understand because they are written for English speaking children, whose English is much more advanced than yours. Let me know how you get on.
